Deer Painting...

Lately it feels like I have lost my artistic motivation, and it is so sad, because I live and breathe creativity. It's forced me to take a step back for the past couple weeks, and I am hoping to get a fresh perspective & become inspired again soon. I've even picked up my paint brush and tried painting at no avail. So, in the meanwhile I wanted to share a portion of one of my favorite pieces that I have created- a sweet deer walking in a field. There is something so soothing about this piece, and it really speaks to resting your spirit, which is probably why I am drawn to sharing it today.

How To Build A Unicorn | A Magical DIY

This tutorial has been a long time in coming. For the past year, I had been planning on making June a unicorn. But I had been dragging my feet, because I knew from my last stuffed animal taxidermy (see HERE) that this project was going to be very involved & complicated. June kept on begging me for a "Real Unicorn" for Christmas, so "Santa" came to our house every night after the kids went to sleep & worked on her magical pet.

It was worth all the blood, sweat & tears - but - I don't think I'll be making another one any time soon.

While I didn't document all the steps (due to MUCH trial and error & midnight sewing) I did take a couple pictures of the process & thought a post about how to build a unicorn might come in handy for other parents in my "where in the world do I get a unicorn" situation...

Disclaimer: Excuse the midnight photos. ;)

So first I drew up what I had in my mind. The unicorn that I made ended up being much larger than I anticipated. But that's okay, becuase June and Jason can both fit comfortably on her back. I am not going to lie- it holds the weight of an adult too. ;)

The first difficult thing I had to think about was how to do a horn. I had a thick dowel in the garage that I thought would work. I screwed it onto a small block of wood & then drilled another hole next to it so I could attach it to the framed head of the unicorn.

Subtle Architectural Details in Master Bedroom

If you saw my last DIY post, you might remember how I built myself some antique architectural charm to go above my doors & windows in my kitchen. Today I thought I would break down all the elements in our master bedroom & highlight some of the projects that pulled it all together.

Our house was pretty "blah" when we moved it. I mean, the bones were good, but nothing special. So I've been trying to pretty it up as best as we can.

One of my favorite details we added to the space is this reclaimed faux fireplace built out of pallets and 2x4's. You can see the how to HERE.

I also wanted a touch of elegance in the space, and this soft tufted headboard is one of my favorite projects ever. We are all about saving money here in the Hathaway household, so it's pretty funny when people come to our house for the very first time and ask where we got our stuff... and I'm like everything except the living room couches has pretty much been built, or second hand refurbished by us. Haha!

How to Build Antique Pediment Door Arches

I'm not going to lie, it's been pretty crazy over here lately. Life has been a little rough this past month or so, but I am trying to get back into the swing of things. So to brighten my mood, I am finally sharing a super fun project I did recently: DIY Chippy Antique Pediments.

Our house was really builder basic when we moved in two years ago. Like gross orange oak cabinets, no backsplash, and no architectural charm. It isn't our "forever home," but I want to love every space we live in. So while we are here, I will keep on adding character to it's bare bones.

It's come so far with the simple fixes we've made over the years. Here's a reminder of where it started. See more of the ugly before HERE.

Today I wanted to share a quick tutorial on adding some architectural character to your home by building some simple DIY door arches. Here's the visual difference of the original builder basic door modeling, before adding character with door pediments.

If we were going to stay longer, there are some things I would change in a heart beat, like the countertops, sink, flooring, door knobs, etc. But they are all in good condition, so for now we will just hold out on those type of updates until our next place (where ever that may be- military family problems, haha!)

A Real Unicorn for Christmas

Hello Everyone! Shock- a new post!

It seems like forever since I have pressed publish, but honestly, it's been rough over here this month. Without going into too many details, it has taken all my energy to just be "mommy" lately. Family always comes first in my life, which sometimes results in me being a horrible blogger. I really wish I was quicker to create awesome content, but life happens. Lately, my time has been consumed with things like teaching my kids to read, telling them a bed story (every single night!), home improvement projects with my husband, and just trying to make memories as a family.

Today I wanted to share one of my favorite DIY's ever!!! Yes, this unicorn you see is a "Do It Yourself"!!!!

Proverbs 31 Woman Watercolor Tutorial

"She is clothed with strength & dignity and she laughs without fear of the future."
Proverbs 31:25

This whole chapter of Proverbs has always been an encouragement to me. I am driven to be strong as a wife, mother, entrepreneur, and woman of God. I really wanted to paint these words for all my fellow woman. Sometimes we feel like we are failing at everything. The house is a mess, the kids are crying, and who know's when the last time we took a shower. It's okay, we all have down days, but you need to remember we were made to be strong. As a work from & stay at home mommy, life can be crazy, but I am so blessed that I have been able to build up my business & create a beautiful home with my husband. It's on my heart to encourage you all to not be afraid to work hard for the things you want- God will give you the desires of your heart. But they don't always come overnight. In fact, sometimes they require many sleepless nights. ;)

Aqua Night Sky Painting

Lately I've been busy teaching my newly turned 5 year old, June, to read. It is a slow, somewhat painful process, but I know she will catch on and be unstoppable soon! So between being a full time mommy & wife, sometimes my internet presence can be pretty quiet. It was pretty embarrassing to realize I haven't shared any of my recent watercolor painting process videos lately. Whoops. I'm still here you guys! I swear! Haha.

Today I thought I'd share the watercolor process behind February's Freebie Calendar. You can get the Free Calendar HERE, or purchase the actual print in my shop HERE

Chalkboard Wall Art Process Video "A Simple Life Is A Beautiful Life"

It's been busy over here in the Hathaway Household. Lots of catching up on projects, teaching toddlers to read, working late, and just "life" happening.

Even though we have officially taken all our Christmas Decor down, I still haven't fully replaced it with "neutral" decor yet.

One of the things I was finally able to change up was our chalkboard wall. This is what it looked like for the holidays, and I didn't want to take it down becuase it looked so pretty. Haha!

I decided to take advantage of it though, and show you all my process... in a video.

Double Exposure Animal Print Set

Hello Friends. Lately I've been hard at work coming up with some beautiful artwork. I finally completed my Double Exposure Animal Print Set. Not to say I won't keep on adding to it,  becuase I am seriously in love with painting animals with this effect. Haha!

Sometimes it's hard to be an artist, because all I want to do is curl up in a ball, paint & create just for myself. I guess that's probably because I am an introvert. Taking the next step of publishing my artwork & selling it has been an intimidating, but rewarding process. I feel like my style & work has developed into something I am really proud of.

I's a little nerve wracking to make my art into products. Don't get me wrong, I love sharing my art with the world, but I am always scared to press "publish" and show people my work.

Hand Lettered By Hannah: Watercolor Tree Tutorial

I recently started branching out (haha) from my normal paintings of animals, arrows, and feathers, and began painting watercolor trees. I LOVE it. They really are a fun project becuase you just go with the flow and add leaves as you go.
